Kinds of Rat
There are two kinds of rat that you may run into in Woodley or any place else in the UK for that matter. The Brown Rat and the Black Rat.
The Brown Rat (Rattus Norvegicus)
The brown rat (common rat, Norwegian Rat (Rattus Norvegicus), street rat or sewer rat) is the most frequently found rat in the UK and all over Europe (also North America). This grey or brown coloured rodent grows to lengths of 4 to 9 inches (plus tail) and weight approximately 140-500g. It was given its name Rattus Norvegicus (Norway Rat) since it was presumed to have spread to the UK by boat from Norway. It's now thought to have originated in Central Asia/China. Brown rats are omniverous (eat more or less anything) although they favour cereals and grains, they've got excellent hearing but poor eyesight, the females reach sexual maturity in just 5 weeks and are able to give birth to 5 litters each year (up to 14 young in each), they climb effectively and dig burrows.
The Black Rat (Ship Rat)
Originating from Southeast Asia (probably India) the black rat, roof rat or ship rat (Rattus Rattus) is also not a native of Britain or Europe. Understood to have been spread at the time of the Roman Empire, this rat possibly reached Continental Europe and Great Britain in spice shipments. Once prevalent in the UK, the black rat essentially disappeared as the brown rat took over. Weighing in at only 75-230g, the black rat grows to lengths of about 5-7 inches. Renowned for causing diseases black rats have been accountable for Weil's disease, toxoplasmosis, typhus, trichinosis, listeria, bubonic plague and salmonella.
Checking for RatsWhen you have a notion you may have rats in your business or property, there are a few ways in which you could find out. You can try to find footprints or tail trails in dusty areas, watch out for rub marks where their greasy fur leaves marks on walls and skirting boards, listen closely for constant scratching noises emanating from attics and walls, in particular at nighttime, keep your eyes peeled for faeces (droppings), they're dark brown in colour and look like large grains of rice, pay attention to gnaw marks in wires, wood and cables, especially in attics, look out for tunnels or burrows next to solid surfaces.
BurrowingThe one thing that rats love to do is burrow and dig, and the location where they primarily love to dig is near to solid objects or structures such as shed bases, , garage foundations and patios. Providing shelter, food storage and nesting places, burrows are excavated into substantial systems that can even cause damage if they remain unchecked. A guaranteed indication of a rat burrow is usually a smooth sided hole close to a solid surface, where the comings and goings of hairy critters have rubbed and polished the entrance hole. The entrances to rat burrows are normally 2" to 4" in diameter. An easy way to learn if rats are nesting in the burrow is to throw some stuff into the burrow entrance and check if it has been cleared the next day.
